"Taxing Stablecoins the Same as Ordinary Crypto Assets Should Be Reconsidered"

  • Park Su-jin (CPA, Korea Institute of Public Finance) presented the proposal at the Korea Law of Taxation Association's autumn conference on October 14 in Yongsan District, Seoul.
  • She argued fiat-pegged stablecoins should receive differentiated tax treatment by transaction type, given their value stability and payment-instrument function.
  • Key concern: taxing every small stablecoin payment like a disposal of ordinary crypto assets (i.e., calculating gains/losses each time) would create excessive taxpayer compliance burdens.
