SBI to Form Japan Joint Venture with US-Based Cross River Bank's Parent, Targeting RWA Tokenization and AI Payments
- SBI and CRB Group (parent of Cross River Bank, founded 2008, a US embedded-finance and digital-asset infrastructure provider) signed a basic agreement for a Japan joint venture plus a planned SBI equity stake in CRB Group, pending regulatory approval in Japan and the US.
- The joint venture will focus on RWA tokenization (including loan receivables), cross-border payments via combined banking/payment infrastructure, and payment rails for AI-agent-driven ('agentic commerce') transactions.
- The firms are also weighing adding JPYSC—a trust-based yen stablecoin co-developed by SBI and Startale Group and issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank—to Cross River's platform, and exploring interoperability between JPYSC and the dollar-denominated stablecoin OUSD, which SBI and Startale recently joined via an open-standard alliance with Visa, Coinbase, and 140+ other members.
