About

Mohammad Faiz Azmi is a Malaysian chartered accountant and barrister. He studied law at Durham University, was called to the English Bar and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He spent more than 30 years at PwC, where he led the global Islamic finance team from 2007 to 2012 and chaired PwC Malaysia from 2012 until 2023. He also chaired the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board from 2009 to 2015, overseeing Malaysia's full adoption of IFRS in 2012.

He joined the board of the Securities Commission Malaysia in 2023 and was appointed its Executive Chairman by the Minister of Finance in June 2024. The SC regulates the capital market, including digital assets, which it has supervised since a 2019 order that brought digital currencies and tokens under securities law. Its register includes licensed digital asset exchanges, initial exchange offering platforms and digital asset custodians.

During his chairmanship the SC has begun testing tokenisation. In April 2026 it worked with Khazanah on Malaysia's first tokenised sukuk, a RM100 million one-year issue presented as part of the direction set by the Capital Market Masterplan 2026-2030. He described tokenisation as a way to improve transparency and broaden participation, and the pilot as a test of those benefits in a controlled and credible way.
