Myanmar military junta submits bill imposing up to life imprisonment for crypto fraud and the death penalty in cases involving forced labor
- Myanmar's military government has submitted an "Anti-Online Fraud Bill" that would impose up to life imprisonment for crypto fraud and target scam center operators and perpetrators of crypto scams with severe punishment.
- The draft bill also includes the possibility of the death penalty for those who use violence, torture, illegal detention, or cruel treatment to force online fraud, as well as for those who subject people to forced labor in scam centers.
- Scam hubs in Myanmar and Cambodia have been running romance scams and crypto investment fraud worldwide, and the U.S. Treasury's OFAC and the U.S. Department of Justice have also sanctioned and prosecuted related individuals and organizations.
