About
The Japan Blockchain Association (JBA) is an industry body set up on 12 September 2014, after the collapse of Mt. Gox, under the name Japan Authority of Digital Assets (JADA). It took its current name in 2016 and absorbed the Blockchain Content Association in 2021. Its representative director is Yuzo Kano, CEO of bitFlyer Holdings. Its board includes executives from Mizuho Financial Group, Startale Group and EY Strategy and Consulting.
JBA aims to support the sound growth of blockchain technology in Japan. Members include startups, large companies and local governments. It runs regular study meetings and subcommittees, including ones on AI, sustainability and security. It also makes policy proposals and holds events such as a blockchain hackathon and annual awards.
JBA sends an annual crypto tax request to the government. Its FY2026 request of 18 July 2025 sought a flat 20.315% separate tax on individuals' crypto gains, a three-year loss carry-forward and the same treatment for derivatives. It also backed an October 2024 proposal for crypto ETFs in Japan. On 2 September 2025 Kano presented at the FSA working group reviewing whether crypto should be regulated under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.
