About

Lee Eog-weon was born in Seoul in 1967. He holds an economics degree from Seoul National University and a PhD in economics from the University of Missouri. He passed the higher civil service examination in 1991 and spent his career in the finance ministry, including a posting as minister-counsellor at Korea's mission in Geneva and as director-general of the Economic Policy Bureau. He was economic policy secretary to the President in 2020-2021 and First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance from 2021 to 2022, then a visiting professor at Seoul National University.

He became Chairman of the Financial Services Commission in September 2025. The FSC is Korea's main financial regulator and leads government policy on crypto markets and stablecoins.

Soon after taking office he told lawmakers that a stablecoin bill, with issuer licensing, full reserves and redemption rights, was in final inter-ministry talks. He has argued that crypto exchanges should be treated as public market infrastructure with limits on major shareholders. In July and August 2026 he told the National Policy Committee that the FSC's Digital Asset Basic Act draft was ready apart from some open points and that he would do his utmost to see it passed in the autumn.
